Picture a place when you wake up every work morning, you are making a cup of your favourite coffee, heading to your bedroom, dining room table or perhaps your hotel room balcony while travelling. Then, you’re turning on your laptop to connect to your business colleagues in Miami, London, Jamaica or even Brazil. Your work hours are very flexible and you control your own vacation. This is the new world and it is forever changing just as emerging technology by the minute.
We in the Caribbean need to understand the job industry is changing as well and we need to adjust. A vast number of people are working remotely on millions of projects around the world. Gone are the days where borders exists as it relates to jobs. There is a thriving internet job industry and I think that many people in the Caribbean are missing the big picture as it passes by daily. We spend time within our shores being distracted by viral main stream social media and not focused on where the internet money is.
Think of creating an online business using Shopify and Fulfillment By Amazon (FBA) for eCommerce platforms. These are programs which allow you to sell goods internationally to millions of potential customers. In a recent survey of 1500 randomly selected Amazon sellers (2016), 54% of them sold up to $100K USD and 37% sold between $100K – $1M USD. Main stream social media is a vital part of the online atmosphere, but use it for your own viral marketing strategies to promote your products and services!
Let’s get creative! Let’s embrace manufacturing through the countries that do it well and join them in designing new products. Then we can export from that country and sell the items in other markets where there is a demand for them. Why only import to Barbados? Let’s just do international trade!
According to Internetworldstats.com, Barbados and the Eastern Caribbean have high internet penetration rates but technology is being wasted and abused all day for some people while others globally flourish from the internet. How many times do we see these internet millionaires pop up in the media but yet most of us are not seeing the opportunity for it to be a source of income across many different industries.
We have many smart and educated minds in our communities that can easily secure hundreds of thousands of jobs which pay in USD. Why aren’t many of us going after these millions of jobs posted on Freelancer.com and upwork.com? The online count of current jobs available at the time of writing this article was well over 10 Million. 10,968,295 jobs to be exact.
Think Freelancer! You can work within your own schedule and choose either quick jobs or long term contracts with businesses and clients. These options can also bring the second additional income that some people are searching for.
As more people living in the Caribbean find these jobs and contracts, let us urge banks in the Caribbean to upgrade so that we can seamlessly support global eCommerce platforms and merchant services. Caribbean people need to access funds earned faster in local bank accounts! Bitcoin companies are also emerging to also offer additional merchant facilities and access to your funds – that’s a work in progress.
Governments in the Caribbean need to push global trade and remote working while urging financial institutions to support and educate about eCommerce. We need to use the internet as the powerful tool it was made to be.
The Caribbean is said to be running out of options. Here are some on the table!

THE solar farm at Trents, St. Lucy is now generating electricity to Barbados’ national grid.
This is a 10-megawatt solar plant, which was started January 2016 and is expected to lead to a reduction in costs and lower the environmental impact the fossil fuels present. The plant significantly reduces carbon dioxide emissions by around 21 000 tonnes yearly. The plant is also projected to save around $10 million per year.
We took out the new DJI Phantom 4 Drone to get a glimpse of the Solar project which looks as if it has been successful and the photos look amazing.
Earlier this year, our entertainment channel, Reality Weekends became an official YouTube Space Partner which enabled us access to YouTube Spaces and film equipment worldwide. With this great accomplishment, I decided to visit the UK and take the opportunity to spend some time at the new YouTube Space located at Google Offices in London. It was a phenomenal experience! I got to tour the facilities, meet the team and receive some much needed training in several areas. After, I even got to organize my own film sessions at the Space.
The mission for Youtube now is to bring together the most creative people in the world too Learn, Connect and Create. With that being said, the YouTube team complimented the Reality Weekends team in Barbados on our productions and encouraged us on a path to reach the next goal.
The Youtube team was energetic, knowledgeable and encouraging. My channel representative took the time to sit down with me for important one on one meetings about our Reality Weekends channel, our new concepts and how to take the channel to the next level globally. Our Creative Director, Graham Cumberbatch was able to Skype in on meetings and be a part of the conceptualizing for the new show.
The new Youtube Space London consists of Ready set shooting areas, 360 degree sets, make up rooms and State of the art film studios with green screens. There are also high tech Audio studios, high-end Camera equipment and Post-production suites. There is also a Youtube Creator Store where Youtubers can sell their apparel and to top it off, there is Space cafe that you can use for meetings and connecting with other YouTubers. Did I mention all food and drinks are free at the YouTube Cafe?
At the Youtube Open house day and Creator training I got the chance to meet other YouTubers and creators. Some were now starting out and others had established channels with hundreds of thousands of subscribers and already making money. I got the chance to collaborate with them all learning and sharing best practices. I met some really cool and exciting people doing great shows and sharing much needed advice and inspiration.
Reality Weekends is now on a new path and I’m confident that with the advice and support of Youtube Spaces in London, New York, LA and Toronto, our team will deliver great videos and receive much success in our ventures.
Thanks to our viewers and everyone that supported us this far with Reality Weekends and look out for our exciting videos coming soon.
I am soon on my way to the UK and decided to buy my new DJI Phantom 4 Professional Drone. I want to get some nice sunset and country side shots while I’m there. I’m thinking about doing a road trip so this will be the ideal time to get a wide range of different sights and landscapes as we tour the country.
Before I arrive to the UK, I thought it would be best to do some research on flying Drones in England. I found a lot of information which I have shared with you below. This will keep us within laws and not get into trouble.
What I found on UK Drone Licenses for Recreational and Commercial use
The use of unmanned aerial vehicles (or drones) for aerial filming and other activities in the UK airspace is governed by the CAA. UAV regulations and guidelines have been set, but they are also evolving as the technology and the industry evolves. Note that what follows is a general summary and full details can be viewed on the CAA’s website where you will find links to the relevant documents and sections on each aspect of UAV operation according to weight and other criteria.
Companies doing commercial work are usually issued with a PfAW (Permission for Aerial Work) document by the CAA having undergone the required training and assessment. This permission is renewed annually.
Anyone using a small drone needs to be aware of the regulations contained in the Air Navigation Order.
This short video guide for what is expected for every drone operator.
The regulations are designed to make UAV flying safe for everyone i.e.other airspace users, those on the ground, and the UAV operators themselves. Some details may change over time so always use the CAA’s website for the latest versions.
Below are the basic rules to which all UAV pilots must adhere when flying UAV weighing 20 kg or less that are equipped with cameras of various types.
The flight must not put anyone or anything in danger of injury or damage.
The aircraft should be kept within the visual line of site of RP (Remote Pilot – the person operating it). This is considered to be a maximum of 400ft vertically and a distance of 500m horizontally. Approval to operate flights beyond these limits must be obtained from the CAA.
Depending on the airspace in which the flight is to take place the RP may need to obtain permission from the appropriate ATU (Air Traffic Unit).
Not over or within 150m of a crowd of 1,000 persons or more.
Not within 50m of any person, vessel, vehicle, or structure which is not under the control of the RP.
Not within 30m of any person, vessel, vehicle, or structure which is under the control of the RP
The RP has the responsibility that the flight can be conducted safely.
Get a drone that shows you the distance on your receiver or monitor. Any of these Approved professional drones can work. Keep track of your height and distance.
I also found a site called NO FLY ZONE UK which alerts you know where NOT to fly your drone. Another site called CanIFlyMyDrone.com lets you search attractions by name, city, or country to find out where you can and can’t operate a drone.
I often travel for business and pleasure. Sometimes it’s throughout the Caribbean on Liat airlines, a very unreliable and over priced carrier in the region. I’ve had my share of good and bad experiences. My bad experiences have led me to say that wouldn’t recommend the airline to any persons travelling in the region but unfortunately there are not many other options. Maybe Caribbean Airlines depending on flight availability would be the alternative and I have a few friends who also chartered small planes like SVG Air but their reviews and feedback were not that great either. So your best bet would be Caribbean Airlines if available or the same Liat Airlines.
Most of my travel is to the United States, Canada, UK and Europe. I’m usually always checking on flights, hotels, activities and business events happening in respective countries. I’ve added a video below which shows you some top tips when travelling to ensure you get the best deals and stress free trips around the world.

Recently, I’ve spent lots of time gathering stock aerial videos of the amazing and beautiful scenic views of Barbados’ coastlines and country sides.
Before I got out on the beaches to do the magic, I had to invest in a few items to get the job done. I first needed a Professional Drone and a good Video editing system.
They are so many types on the market and I was a bit confused at first. After doing some research, a few drones really stood out. These were the DJI Professional, Phantom 3 Professtional, the Phantom 4 and the Yuneec Typhoon 4k.
For the Video editing system, I decided to go with the ASUS i7 Gaming Laptop. This works perfectly for me although some friends still insist that I should get a Macbook Pro. All in all my new powerful laptop gets the job done well.
I did the video below: It’s a Drone Aerial Barbados Reel I have created to feature some of the many sample shots available for sale in my Stock Aerial Video Portfolio.
